When I was paying off my debt I spent a lot of time looking for ways to make extra money. All I wanted to do was to be debt free once and for all.
After five and a half years I was debt free and could cut back on the side hustles. Now that I am unemployed I am revisiting some of these options will I am job searching. These are great ways to make additional money for the holidays, too.
Below are some of the ways I made extra money in the past:
1. Sold name brand clothes on eBay
One of my favorite side hustles was buying plus size clothing from a local store, Half of Half Name Brand Clothing, and selling it on eBay. This store sold the cloths at 75% below retail and sometime they clothes were marked down even further.
I would shop, take pictures, post on eBay and ship the clothes to the highest bidder. This was a pretty lucrative hustle. If I still lived in that town I would definitely do this again.
2. Babysat for families with multiple children
I found my families on Care.com, but you can advertise by word of month or put up flyers. Families with multiple children pay more for the same amount of time. I recommend night time babysitting, because you can do other things online like surveys while the children sleep.
3. Got roommates for my apartment & home
Roommates is one of the easiest ways to make money. You must find the right roommate to ensure a good fit. A bad roommate is more stress than they are worth. With each roommate I saved more money. My rule is to only have one roommate at at a time. Each time the savings grew. Roommate #1 save about $300 per month, roommate #2 increased the savings to $450 and roommate #3 increased my savings to $650.
Finding the right roommate is not always easy. I have found mine on craigslist.com and it took connecting to 35 people before I found my current roomie. So far all is well.
4. Merchandising team at Macy’s
In the beginning I under estimated to value of working a part-time job. One day a the Macy’s merchendising manager asked if I wanted to work part-time for her. The hours were 6AM to 12PM on Satruday & Sunday, so I gave it a try. My job was to go into the store before it opened and mark down items with reduced prices.
This was a good gig, because I was done early enough to have most of my weekend. It also added about $400 – $500 per month to the debt snowball.
5. Donate Plasma
Donating plasma isn’t for everyone. Before I got paid to donate plasma, I was donating to the Red Cross or other local blood bank. I only recommend that people donate plasma if they can go to a Biolife plasma donation center. They pay per donation regardless of how much you donate. Other centers pay base on your weight, since your weight determines how much you can donate.
You can donate twice per week. On average I made about $240 extra per month for 8-12 hours of my time.
Swagbucks is a fairly new find for me. I have been completing surveys, watching videos, and shopping online to earn Wal-Mart gift cards. It’s a quick way to make some extra cash at home on my own time. In the past two and a half months I have made an extra $265. Sign up now and get $5 for signing up.
